My first album project - wow - it's really happening!
My musical journey started late in life, well into my 40's. Though I sang in school choirs, and to my babies from our rocking chair, I didn't fall in love with music until I was watching my own children do so. It was all around us, we were living and breathing it, I just didn't recognize how deeply connected to the music I really was. Once I realized that I was part of it a whole new world opened up for me.
RESTLESS is a great illustration of who I really am. I am truly a crazy mixed up ball of chaos, bouncing all over the place, sometimes carefree, rarely deliberate, always unpredictable. Never content to do just one thing ~ I want to do it all, all at once, and then try it again another way too!
This album is diverse as I am ~ Jazz-based, but full of Folk, 70's Jazz-Rock Fusion & some RnB influences. You'll hear one of my own original songs, classic standards, new lyrics to favorite instrumentals, two beautiful songs written by the wonderful and gracious James Solomon, and a lovely Bossa Nova by Canadian David R. Miller. I also cover my favorite Joni Mitchel, Steely Dan tunes. The title song, "Restless Wondering", was written for me by my friend, singer-songwriter Danie Ocean, on the fly, as that's how we roll, and caps off the album's story beautifully.
So what is the story? RESTLESS is all about the myriad of thoughts and feelings we experience as we journey through love & life ~ our celebrations, our losses ~ affairs of the heart that propel us forward and sometimes stop us in our tracks. The songs speak to returning home, breaking away, and those moments when our "quiet hearts, they skip a beat"... RESTLESS is about not being afraid to listen to your heart.
I recorded RESTLESS, my first album, with Glenn Barratt at MorningStar Studios, literally on the way out of town ~ moving cross-country with my husband Marc & my aging mother. Prompted by our own "restless wondering" we're pursuing a new adventure together "East of the Sun & West of ... Seattle". I couldn't leave Philly without saying what I needed to say, so I brought in a wonderful studio team to help me! I am privileged to have been able to record with acclaimed Jazz pianist Tom Lawton, contemporary Jazz saxophonist, Fostina Dixon, and the amazing and sophisticated Jazz-Rock-Alternative team; Kevin Hanson, guitar, Jim Stager, bass and Erik Johnson on drums.
I am so grateful.
Friday the 13th! How Lucky! Let's Party!
I am so excited about my December return to Philly to share this intimate part of myself with you all. Please join me on Friday, December 13th for the evening at Jamey's House of Music ~ a lovely intimate room in Lansdowne near the train station. Dinner is offered at 6 pm and the show will start at 8. Jamey's is a BYOB!
It's also my Birthday week, so let's make it a party! I will have CDs available for purchase & other special celebratory treats there for you as well.
Concert musicians will include RESTLESS! musicians Tom Lawton on keys & Fostina Dixon on sax... as well as former Jean Therapy musicians; Tom Glenn, guitar, George Livanos, bass, John Ciliberto, drums. We will play tunes from the album, of course, some of my favorite out-of-the-box seasonal tunes.. and have some special guests! #BestBandEver
Seating is limited, so please get your tickets now through Jamey's website!
* Many thanks to my mother, Lois Jean Belknap, who helped make this project possible.
This album is dedicated to her feisty spiritedness ...
to my father who loved Jazz...
to my husband Marc who lets me be me...
and to my children who inspire me every day.
